What does the Lecture committee do?
The Lecture committee is responsible for planning and running celebrity speaking events on campus. We bring in comedians, politicians, and celebrities — basically any notable public figures — to come and speak to Pitt undergraduate students. As a committee, we brainstorm people we’d like to bring to campus, draft interview questions for the guests, and set up the William Pitt Union Assembly Room on the night of the speaking events. My committee members and I are responsible for running the entirety of our speaking events. Committee members get a unique opportunity to see the behind-the-scenes of event planning and speaking events.
What was your favorite event last semester?
This is a tough question. All three of our Lecture events this semester were so much fun. It’s probably a tie between our Victoria Garrick Browne lecture and our Jennette McCurdy lecture. Victoria Garrick Browne is one of the kindest people you’ll ever meet. She was so warm and friendly, and I loved hearing her talk about her mental health experiences. Our Jennette McCurdy lecture was also so cool, and my committee members did such an awesome job running that event.
In terms of non-Lecture events, I really loved the laser and fireworks show that happened at the beginning ofOctober. That one is always one of my favs that we do during the year.
When does the Lecture committee meet?
The Lecture committee meets on Tuesdays at 8pm. We are always welcoming new members. If you’re interested in learning more about the Lecture committee, definitely stop by to say hello! We’d love to have you on the committee😊
